The widely set 3/4-inch thick top is both clear and conceptual, revealing a private glimpse into the central drum of the tree-like base. And the open, almost x-ray detail of the handhoned metalwork creates an intriguing positive-negative effect. Important and complex, the piece is surprisingly fluid, light and transcendent … not at all unlike the epic poem that inspired it.
