materials and fillings

tickings
The original name for a tightly woven fabric used to contain the fillings of a mattress. The quality of ticking is judged by the density of the warp (longitudinal) and weft (lateral) yarns. It is made on a Jacquard loom that allows for the weaving of complex designs using many colours.

timber
All the timber in Vi-Spring box springs is sourced from managed sustainable sources, independently certified in accordance with internationally recognized schemes with Chain of Custody certification to demonstrate traceability.

fillings
There are three different categories of mattress filling:

comfort layers – providing fluffiness, softness, ventilation and moisture regulation, placed directly underneath the ticking of the mattress.

insulators - should be strong and have some 'mass' to divide pressure or to protect the softer comfort layers/filling materials.

filling materials – must be resilient to give support during sleep and, after a night’s sleep, to return mattress to its original shape. In general, the higher the grams per square metre (gsm), the more 'comfort' the product will offer.

Vi-Spring's natural fillings include horsehair, cotton, coir, lambswool, cashmere, mohair, silk, blended lambswool and cotton and bonded lambswool and cotton.

horsehair
Mane and tail of the horse. Absorbs and allows moisture to evaporate quickly, very resilient and springy, it bounces back after compression and doesn’t break or lose natural flexibility.

lambswool
The first clip of wool sheered from lambs up to eight months old. The wool is soft, slippery and very resilient. It maintains its inherent springiness well. It has hydroscopic properties that enable it to absorb dampness or moisture without becoming wet itself.

cashmere
A luxury fibre wool obtained from the soft fleecy undergrowth of the Kashmir goat of Tibet, Mongolia, China and India.

mohair
The wool-like textile fibre produced as a simple fleece on Angora Goats. The lustrous, long and strong hair has distinctive properties offering great durability for a long lasting product.

silk
A prized natural filament fibre produced by the silkworm; one of the oldest textile fibres in the world. For centuries silk has had a reputation as a luxurious and sensuous fabric associated with wealth and success.

coir
Coir fibres are found between the husk and the outer shell of a coconut. It is thick, strong and has high abrasion resistance.

flax
The common name for Linacae, a family of annual herbs. Flax is strong, and very durable. Flax twine is used for the genuine hand side-stitching.

cotton
A unicellular, natural fibre that grows in the seed pod of the cotton plant. Benefits include wicking moisture away from body during sleep.

calico pocket cloth
Calico is a 100% natural product which comes from a renewable resource and is biodegradable. Cotton calico is hypoallergenic (does not irritate sensitive skin or cause allergies), absorbs water easily, dries easily and breathes. It will not cause static electricity.

cotton cambric
Tightly woven calendered 100% cotton fabric, used to prevent fibre percolation through ticking.

vanadium steel wire
Vanadium acts to improve spring resilience properties in steel springs and creates more consistent springing that is less likely to suffer height loss with use.

ecological packaging credentials
Vi-Spring cartons are made from 80% virgin material (from sustainable forests) and 20% recycled material. They are 100% recyclable. Our supplier has been awarded 'second most Green Company in the world' (by 'The Independent') and is Chain of Custody certified. The production process is totally chlorine free.

bamboo
Known in the textiles industry for its soft and silk-like qualities, bamboo fibre is not only wonderfully indulgent, it is one of the most environmentally friendly materials available. Its unique anti-allergenic and antibacterial characteristics, combined with its ability to absorb and ventilate moisture, allows for an altogether healthier night's sleep.

‘VI’ represents, in Roman numerals, the six coils in every spring they make.
